Apple’s foray into classical music streaming The launch of Apple Music Classical In an industry dominated by popular music, companies like Apple are stepping up their efforts to break down barriers and bring this timeless genre to a wider audience through streaming. Classical music represents just 0.8% of streams, even in the stream-friendly market of the United States. However, there is one genre that has been a stubborn hold-out in the streaming landscape – classical music. From pop to rock to hip-hop, music lovers have embraced the convenience and accessibility of streaming platforms. Example: Caroline Shaw’s Draft of a High Rise.Classical music streaming: Breaking barriers and finding an audience Introduction A small but significant presenceĪccording to figures from last year, streaming now accounts for more than 80% of the music that we listen to. Example: Lim’s Songs found in Dream Land.ģ) Minimalist Music: Minimalism has come so far from it’s roots in Glass that people talk of Post-Minimalism now. A sub-category here are works that combine “noise” and silence a la Lachenmann. Example: Lera Auerbach’s Fragile Solitudes for String Quartet and Orchestra is quintessentially Russian, imo, and is the truest inheritor of Shostakovich’s more boundary-pushing works. Example: Christopher Rouse’s great symphonies.Ģ) Modernist Music: This is the stuff a lot of people here hate, but they’re missing out on any number of powerful, dynamic, and moving pieces. There’s lots of 21st century music that is tonal, melodic, etc.
But I’d say there should be a list for:ġ) Neo-Traditionalist Music (music that sounds contemporary somehow, but that makes sense to listeners whose preference is for music before about 1900). There should really be three lists here, since there are at least three different strains of 21st classical, and even those three are quite various. I can only speak for myself – I thought it was astonishing and it moved me. Some critics might consider suspect any new work that receives such an overwhelmingly favorable response from an audience. It’s very powerful, soulful, and not at all cliched as it could have been. Gandolfi wrote “Ascending Light” in commemoriation of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. In my entire life, I have never heard such a thunderous response from the audience to any premiere – the audience was overwhelmed and responded accordingly. In a world with many Requiems, this one seemed to have something original to say and was genuinely affecting.Ģ) Michael Gandolfi’s organ concerto, “Ascending Light.” This was also premiered by the BSO conducted by Andris Nelsons, and it was both brilliant and devastating. Regardless, it was impressive and seemed to have its own voice and not be derivative. It was recorded recently but I have not yet listened to the recording. I found myself really drawn into it, and I wanted to hear it again live (but so far have not had the chance). That said, there are 2 new works I’ve heard in this century that I thought were rather special:ġ) John Harbison’s Requiem, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink. I’ll also be upfront that I only respond to tonal music, so anything 12-tone is simply never going to reach me in any sort of favorable way. Most new music that I’ve heard does not merit a second listen.
